AFAIK, the 56 and 72 were always 22" deep, but could be mistaken. Top drawer on the 44" box is about the same as the 56" box. The 44" and 56" boxes have optional top boxes, but the 72 doesn't. Bang for the buck seems to be the 44, but I'll probably get the 56 next time.
